The Zeniths of 1938 a 15 tube art deco example of the machine age styling. These Zenith sets have always intrigued me with their great Deco look with the big black motorized robot dials. Some collectors refer to this model as the shutter dial. It is quite an interesting design where the various short wave bands are opened up by moving a lever below the tuning knob that causes the dial face to open like camera irises or shutters. The patent for this new dial was issued to Zenith in 1937 and these sets were only produced for the one year

1935 Zenith model 808 MW SW radio

To ardent lovers of table radios deriving from the climax of the 1930's Art Deco period, Zenith's model 809 is pure and delectable eye candy. For what a superbly crafted piece it is! Its individual attributes, comprising a waterfall front of rich veneers, decorative inlays and vaulted base, a grille beautifully adorned with chrome, beset with eclectic dial and knobs, all combine harmoniously to produce a cumulative effect far greater than the sum of the separate parts. In fact one's sentiments for this gem can be expressed in no better words than those taken from Zenith's own original model 809 advertising, for it is "truly a veritable masterpiece among  table radios".

1954 Zenith model  G516W clock radio

Weird front end, Zenith uses a 12AT7 as AM/FM oscillator-mixer, 6BJ6 as AM RF amp and 6AB4 as FM RF amp, 2- 6BA6 455kHz and 10.7MHz. IF amps and 1- 6AU6 10.7MHz. IF. This radio has the hottest AM and good FM because the AM has an RF amp and two IF amps. They use (and was the problem I had) 19T8 as AM 2nd detector and FM ratio detector and triode 1st AF feeding a 35C5 output. It originally had a selenium ½ wave rectifier but now has 1N4001 and 35Ω resistor. This same design was made from 1948 to 1963.
